1. What is a building permit?: A building permit is an official approval to proceed with a construction project. 5. Where am I required to put smoke alarms in my home?: On March 25, 2009 Colorado House Bill 1091, also called the Lofgren and Johnson Families Carbon Monoxide Safety Act, was signed into law. This law requires homeowners and owners of rental property to install carbon monoxide (CO) alarms near the bedrooms (or any other room lawfully used for sleeping purposes) in every home that is heated with fossil fuel, has a fuel-fired appliance, has a fireplace, or has an attached garage. This requirement applies to every home that is sold, remodeled, repaired, or leased to a new tenant after July 1, 2009. This law does not apply to commercial buildings. For permits issued after July 1, 2009, inspections for all interior alterations and additions will include verification of correct installation of smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms.

6. I am a construction contractor, am I required to register?: All contractors must be licensed by the City and pay an annual contractor’s license fee. Electricians do not need to purchase a City license but must be registered with the City.

7. What is a Certificate of Occupancy (C.O.)?: When the work is completed and has been inspected, you will a receive a Certificate of Occupancy. This certificate formally marks completion of the project with the knowledge that it has been approved. Please refer to the fee schedule for applicable fees.

8. What documents must I display at the job site?: The building permit card must be in a visible location at the construction site. A copy of the approved plans must be on the job site at all times. Any proposed changes to the approved plan must be brought to the attention of the Building Official. Some changes will require review and approval.

9. How can I contact the building official?: The City of Dacono Department of Community Development exists to help make residential and business improvement projects safe and long-lasting. 10. Does the City need to inspect my project?: When the work begins, the City will inspect each major phase of construction. It is the responsibility of the person doing the work to schedule inspections at least 24 hours in advance. If the inspector finds that some of the work does not meet minimum code requirements, he will provide a written explanation of the corrections that must be made to bring the work up to acceptable standards.
